05 Jul 2009

The 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships will take place on Sunday 11th October 2009 bringing a fantastic opportunity to see some of the world’s top runners competing on the streets of Birmingham. Athletes from more than 50 countries are expected to take part with a total of 200 runners expected to compete. In addition, the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon will be taking place on the same day and thousands of runners from the West Midlands region and beyond will be able to run in the footsteps of these top athletes. This is the second year that this event has taken place and this year we want to make it even bigger and better.

However you don’t just have to watch it, you can be part of it. Last year more than 500 volunteers helped to make the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon a success and we couldn’t have done it without them. This year along with the 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships we’re looking for more of the same.

• Would you like to get involved in these fantastic events?
• Have you got a passion for sport?
• Would you like to be part of the success of another major event in Birmingham?

Whatever your reason, your city needs you! It’s a chance to meet some great people, gain some invaluable experience and be part of something special.

Take a look below at some of the roles we have available. Some roles will need little or no experience while others may be better suited to people who have volunteered on previous events. Either way we’re sure that we can find a role to suit you, with around 500 volunteers needed there’s plenty of opportunities.

Volunteers must be 16 or over and available to work on the day of the event and for some specific roles on the days leading up to the event as well. Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt and a sweatshirt to wear and will be given lunch. The hours will differ but generally on the day of the event there will be a 7am start finishing at around 4pm. Full briefing will be provided to each volunteer for the role that is assigned to them. Organisations, charities and Scout and Girl Guide groups are welcome to volunteer as a group, as team work is essential to some of the roles and duties that we need fulfilled.

Its hard work, its rewarding and its worth it so if you’re interested click here and fill in the form, we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Some of the roles that will be required on the day include:

• Race Marshals
• Water Station Assistants
• Race Marshal Supervisors
• Baggage Assistants
• Finish Line Distributors
• Sports Massage Therapists

There will be other roles as well, which have yet to be confirmed. Please check back here for more details.
