The IAAF World Half Marathon Championships will be returning to the country where it all began as Great Britain held the very first edition of the event on Tyneside back in 1992 when Benson Masya of Kenya won the Men’s Race and where there was a home winner in the Women’s Race with Britain’s Liz McColgan taking the honours.

Since 1992 the event has been staged a further 16 times, with two editions (in Debrecen in 2006 and Udine in 2007) being known as the World Road Running Championships.

The 2009 event will be the third time that the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships has been held in Great Britain as Bristol also staged the event in 2001. On this occasion the Men’s Race was won by Haile Gebrselassie from Ethiopia and the Women’s Race saw another British victory on home soil with Paula Radcliffe winning her second of three IAAF World Half Marathon Championship titles.
